🔬 Can sunflower pollen help pollinators thrive? 🌻🐝

A new review published in Frontiers in Plant Science as part of the #HelEx project dives deep into the floral resources provided by sunflowers and what they really mean for bee health.

🌾 While sunflower pollen is often considered nutritionally poor, the story is more complex. Some studies suggest it may reduce parasite loads in bumble bees. Nectar composition and flower traits also vary widely across varieties and environments.

💡 Key takeaway: floral quality isn’t just about protein. Sugars, amino acids, and secondary metabolites all shape pollinator behavior and health.

This review is a call to rethink how we assess pollinator resources in crop species and to integrate these traits into breeding strategies.
