USDA representative visit on HelEx genetic approach

In July 2025, HelEx welcomed a visit from a USDA representative interested in the project’s genetic approach to sunflower. Given the historical link between North American wild Helianthus diversity and European sunflower breeding, transatlantic exchanges are particularly valuable for a project like HelEx.

Nicolas Langlade (INRAE) presented how HelEx exploits wild sunflower genetic resources originating from North America to improve climate resilience and pollinator-friendly traits in European cultivars. The visit was an opportunity to discuss data sharing, germplasm access and possible future collaborations.

For HelEx, maintaining scientific dialogue with USDA strengthens the transatlantic dimension of sunflower research and improves the chances of coordinated efforts on the conservation and use of wild genetic resources in the long term.
